Roman Reigns Explains How a Flubbed Promo With John Cena Helped Him in the Long Run

By JIMMY TRAINA April 05, 2018
The date was Aug. 28, 2017.

During a heated promo with John Cena on a live edition Monday Night Raw, Roman Reigns had a momentary brain freeze and forget his lines. Reigns was listing Cena’s faults and came out of the gates in strong fashion, telling Cena he sucked. However, when Reigns got to “second of all,” he froze. He did drop a smile, indicating that he knew he was flubbing on live on TV.

On the latest episode of the SI Media Podcast, Reigns explained just what happened during that promo.

“What happened was I ad-libbed a little bit because something was going on with the crowd. I think they were chanting something like, ‘Cena sucks,’ so I used that and it threw me off a bit and the moment I took a second, John’s really good at just chiming in, and he started going to town with his own ad-libs. You can see it starting to piss me off because each time I tried to say something, he was quick to cut me off and eventually I had to get to the piece that I’m gonna say, so it actually did a huge favor for me because you can kinda see where I boil over where it becomes, like, ‘Screw the lines, I don’t care if I remember them or if I forget them. I’m going.’ Read more

Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns will once again meet on The Grandest Stage of Them All, as The Beast Incarnate defends his Universal Title against The Big Dog at WrestleMania 34.

The second singles match between two of WWE’s most dangerous gladiators was set in motion when Reigns defeated John Cena, Braun Strowman, Elias, Seth Rollins, Intercontinental Champion The Miz and Finn Bálor in the first-ever Seven-Man Elimination Chamber Match.

Of course, this return bout has been years in the making; Reigns and Lesnar first collided at WrestleMania 31 in a grueling brawl that never reached a decisive end. Seth Rollins famously cashed in his Money in the Bank contract in the middle of the match, pinning Reigns to claim Brock’s WWE World Heavyweight Title in a shocking twist.

The two rivals have met again in multi-man matches, but have never squared off one-on-one since that fateful night.

Reigns — who beat Triple H at WrestleMania 32 to win the WWE World Heavyweight Title — now has a second opportunity to show that he can topple Brock and become champion on WWE’s biggest stage.

Lesnar — who hasn’t suffered a loss since 2016 — has another opportunity to put Reigns down with the world watching and prove that WWE is, in fact, his yard.

Which of these two warriors will walk out of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans as Universal Champion? Find out when Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns collide at WrestleMania 34, streaming live on WWE Network on Sunday, April 8

Roman Reigns sees a win over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania as a victory not just for him, but the majority of the WWE roster.

“It wouldn’t only be huge for me. It would be huge for this whole locker room,” Reigns said in a phone interview. “This is a team thing that we do and I represent this new generation.”

Reigns will face Lesnar for the Universal championship at WrestleMania in New Orleans on Sunday. It will be the second time in four years the two will be in the ring together at WrestleMania with a title on the line.

In 2015, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to beat Reigns and Lesnar for the WWE championship at Levi’s Stadium. To Reigns, his current match is a completion of his work this year, but also his journey back to that moment with Lesnar. Read more

Paul Heyman is backstage on the phone when Kurt Angle walks up. Heyman hangs up and Angle tells him how important it is to make sure the WrestleMania main event stays intact. Heyman says they will go out to the ring tonight but they will take it easy and save anything controversial on Roman Reigns for Sunday in the ring. Angle mentions being concerned for Brock Lesnar and Heyman laughs in his face. Angle just asks Heyman to keep it civil tonight. Heyman says he and his client will take that into consideration. They thank each other and Angle walks off with Heyman laughing.

Back from the break and Kurt Angle walks up on Roman Reigns backstage. Angle already has one WrestleMania match not happening, Cena vs. Taker, and doesn’t need another. He brings up how Paul Heyman has promised not to incite things tonight. This leads to Reigns threatening to hit the ring if they say one wrong thing tonight. Reigns doesn’t care about Angle’s peace treaty. Reigns tells Angle to take the peace treaty to the same pawn shop he took his Olympic gold medals to. Reigns storms off. Read more

This past Monday night on Raw, Roman Reigns’ suspension was lifted, and The Big Dog saw fit to incite a brawl with Universal Champion Brock Lesnar, despite suffering a vicious beating at the hands of The Beast Incarnate one week prior.

Reigns is clearly worse for wear after once again being brutalized by The Beast, but he will nevertheless challenge Lesnar for the Universal Title at WrestleMania.

What’s going through Reigns’ mind as that title bout approaches? Will he attempt to stagger The Conqueror before The Show of Shows, despite his previous attempts ending in disaster?

We’ll find out when Raw goes live in Atlanta.
